3 out of 5 stars great at times, spotty most times   November 15, 2008

I got this Logitech remote about 18 months ago, and have waited long to write this review. The Logitech online / PC-based interface to set up the remote is very simple. It appears to have most current electronics products. It definitely has my Denon AV Receiver, JVC HDTV, Sony components and Gefen HDMI switch. Well I've had problems from the start with the Sony ES CD-R deck, the Sony ES tape deck and the Gefen switch. Even though the exact models are on the Logitech database, for some reasons, the controls listed ont he remote after sett-up are not what are needed to operate the devices. For example, for my Gefen 2-to-1 HDMI switch, I require just a toggle switch ("1" or "2" for the 2 sources). But the 550 remote gives me 10 input sources for some reason. I've reprogrammed it over a dozen times, but it doesnt seem to want to set the input sources correctly. I've tried to manually set the number of devices, but then it doesn't work right. And after 18 months of once/twice a week use, the buttons on the volume control especially are starting act weird... while they dont actually get stuck, it's very close to being so. I chose not to pay the extra for a remote with e color screen (where's the utility in that?), but I'm now wishing I'd spent the money on a real higher end remote...

Works great, now even my parents can watch a DVD when they visit! Very customizable.

I like this product very much. The set up was pretty easy. I still have to figure out some timing issues with the input. It is set to change the input right after turning on the tv. However, i believe most tv's now take a while to turn on. I can add a command to change it after a few seconds, but then it doesn't work when the tv is already on. For example, if i want to change the input from hdmi to channel 3, it would change but then it would add the extra change making it channel 33. But I think I can fix it with some tweaking. And most people probably don't use the coaxial input, but I had an old vcr that I still wanted to use to convert my tapes. Quality is great, backlight is great.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent universal remote   November 4, 2008

Component: Olevia LCD, Phillips DVD player, Vocopro karaoke machine, Pioneer receiver.

PRO: this baby controls everything including the Vocopro. The thing I love most about this remote control is that it's programmable via the RF(?).
Cons: None.

This is a powerful device, so don't expect it to auto learn/detect everything for you. It will take some tuning to get it to work the way you LIKE it. I don't mind tuning it to get it mapped out the way I like it.

1 out of 5 stars Do not buy this unless...   November 3, 2008

After verifying that it would work with my equipment on Logitech's website, I bought it and sure enough, it really did not work with 2 of the 3 that I had. Many hours later, I finally got it manually programmed well enough to make use of it. 5 minutes later, it crashed. So if you are lucky enough to have equipment that it works with first time out, then lucky you. If not, then you will likely throw the thing against the wall like I did. It was rugged enough to take the hit, so instead, I had to bend it in half, thoroughly completing its destruction with my bare hands before chucking it back in the box, while hooting in sadistic glee.

One final thought: What kind of idiocy is it that allowed them to write software for programming the remote that must have internet access to work at all? I can see updates done this way, or occasionally uploading the settings for safe keeping, but that is about the limit. This is just too stupid for words.
