Great design in theory, poor quality control November 20, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have tested countless rear bicycle tail lights. No tail light so far is without problems. Planet Bike makes very good products. To be considered a great tail light a few requirements must be met: Easy, secure mounting, great optics for viewing straight on and from the sides, and a durable, quality switch. Planet Bike has a good, not great mount (the light tends to jiggle in the mount, which may simply be a quality control issue, not a design issue), very good straight on optics, and average optics from the side. Where is fails is in the switch category. I have purchased 4 of these lights, and two of them have defective switches. The light will change modes (from on to off to blinking) when you hit minor defects in the road. 3 stars for the light (very good straight on viewing, average side viewing), 3 stars for the mount, and 0 stars for the switch, arrives at the 2 star rating. They need to either use a Cateye type switch, or a Princeton Tec Swerve type switch.
Extremely Visible, Even in least ideal conditions November 19, 2008 I bought this taillight based on the reviews here on amazon, but I hesitated to provide a review because how am I really supposed to judge how well it works while I am on my bike?
Well today I was driving my car on a very heavily lit busy street, in very foggy conditions, and as I was driving I turned the corner and was immediately aware of a very prominent and frankly slightly annoying blinking red light. It was visible between tons of cars and street lamps, and I drove up closer to try and figure out what light it was and sure enough it was the same light I had purchased for my bike. This to me was plenty of proof that I would not be looked over when I was on my bike, as this light was almost more apparently than all the car tail lights I saw. Amazing.
super bright November 16, 2008 much brighter than the other lights I have used, small, reasonably light, perfect clip for the back of my seatpost bag. Standard batteries. Love it!
Only if you like inflicting seizures on the drivers behind you November 14, 2008 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
I bought this light before I really did the math. All the reviews here say it's great, but everyone seems to use it on flash mode, which I don't like. It's difficult for drivers to gauge the speed and distance of a frantically flashing and blinking light, which is why there are so many laws on the books all over the world banning the mode.
So, this has a steady mode, but if I'm doing my math right, two 1000 mAh AA batteries can only light a half-watt LED for a shade over 6 hours. That's not bad, but I like my rear light to be my last resort light that almost never dies. Plus, most of the light is wasted on a very tight beam, making this just a 2-dollar, disposable tail light to any cars not directly behind you and the perfect distance back to be right where you've aimed the beam. I'm going to keep looking for something that will give me a long-lasting, steady glow.
Perfect light but.. November 11, 2008 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is my best rear flash light I have ever used so far for the visibility, strength and practice. However, this is not enough if you can't fit it in a visible solid place. If you have a seat bag like I do you have to give up either that or the light as the light will not be visible and will be blocked by the bag. Knowing that you can't just raise the seat randomly and your leg when spread has to be at least 10 degrees, this is a problem.
It only comes with 1 typical mounting solution which doesn't work for my bicycle. The bracelet is not flexible and the light itself will not mount on just any other bracelets. If you want to mount it on the side bridge you may lose flexibility as the flash would have to point up and lose its famous sharp visibility. Unless you install it up side down, but then you may lose the flash on a bump or shock.
I started looking for another bag to set it up somewhere else so I can install the super flash under the seat. Unfortunately, they don't mention this significant issue in the description.
If you are buying the super flash to install it under the seat and you don't use a seat bag, then this is PERFECT for you and you'll love it.
