Product Description
The Tippmann 98 Custom is made of die-cast aluminum with an extra-sturdy finish. More significantly, the marker boasts Tippmann's Anti-Chop Technology (A.C.T.), a system consisting of a rear bolt, front bolt, and linkage arm with movements dictated by the location of a paintball in the chamber prior to firing. If a paintball is fed correctly, the system's front bolt and rear bolt travel together--connected by the linkage arm--to fire the ball. However, if a ball is lodged inside the chamber incorrectly, the system moves the bolts independently until the lodged ball falls into position. Once the ball is back in place, the marker cycles itself to discharge the ball at normal velocity. Not only does the A.C.T. system prevent stalls and "blowback" (a sudden release of trapped air into the hopper), but it also maintains shot velocity, as the cycle speed never changes. It's a must for the serious paintball enthusiast. Additional features include a quick-release feeder elbow, a removable front grip (for adding an expansion chamber and vertical kits), and a 200-round hopper. The Tippmann 98 Custom Basic is fully compatible with CO2, compressed air, or nitrogen and comes with a marker maintenance pack with a barrel sleeve, oil, wrenches, cleaning cable, and spare tank O-ring. 5 out of 5 stars Hands down the best paintball marker made.   March 1, 2008
In my opinion, this is the very best paintball marker. I cannot think of any cons about this gun. But there are plenty of pros.
As you may know its a constant battle between Tippmann and Spyder. Tippmann is popular for reliabilaty and Spyder is popular for performance. However, I have never seen an electronic Spyder work for more than a day. Tippmann by far beats Spyder in reliabilaty. My Tippmann has never failed me and people often say it can't be used in speedball, however, the last speedball game I played in, I shot 5 out of 12 people ...hmmmm that sounds like it works very well for speedball to me. People say its a noob gun because it shoots slow. Well it shoots 8 bps (balls per second) out of the box. Thats faster than some Spyder markers. In fact the Tippmann 98 custom is the most upgradeable marker in the paintball market. For instance, you can add a e-trigger to the 98 to make it shoot much faster, but you can call it a newbie gun if you want to.
If someone ever tells me that it is a newbie gun, they seem to change their mind after I lite 'em up on the field. So, if you want a marker for an inexpensive price, heck, if you want a marker that will last more than a day, this is, by far, the gun to buy.

5 out of 5 stars Handsdown the most reliable marker I have owned   January 10, 2008
It may not shoot as fast as other markers but with few modifications like a responce trigger or egrip it can keep up with them. Also an upgraded hopper will help. It is one of the most reliable markers I have owned. When friends new to paintball ask what marker I would suggest for them to buy, my first thought is the reliability and ease of maintaining a tippmann 98.

2 out of 5 stars Decent, but not great.   November 14, 2007

The 98 custom is a decent gun, but for it's performance, it's not worth the price. It is pretty accurate, however there are many guns at the same price that are better. It also can be heavy with an air can on, and comes with a very slow firing trigger. On the brightside, it doesn't chop paintballs often. If you are looking for a cheaper, good quality paintball gun, I would reccommend any Kingman Spyder markers (Except for the Spyder Xtra). Spyders are light weight, easy to clean, and pretty accurate, perfect for beginners, intermediates, and recreational players. I would reccommend semi-auto spyders just because I don't like any electric guns. If you are willing to pay a little more, the Tippmann A-5 is the best affordable gun on the market today. It will NEVER chop balls, is extremely accurate and pretty easy to upgrade and clean once you get the hang of it.

To sum it up - - if you don't want to pay more than this, get a Spyder marker
If you are willing to pay a little more - get an A-5
I do not reccommend the 98 custom

4 out of 5 stars Tippmann 98 w/ ACT   July 31, 2007
The 98 is a good gun for us beginners. I purchased this as a gift for a friend because we are all new to paintball and this marker seemed to have the most options to upgrade over time if we get more involved in the sport. So far unlike some of the rental's we've used none of the paintballs broke/chopped in this marker, and it shoots consistently. With the Co2 tank and the loader fully loaded this marker feels lighter than the rentals we've played with previously. The only problems I've noticed with this marker is that the loader is off to the right of the barrell which makes it feel unbalanced, leaning to the right, but the benefit to that is that with the loader offset it's easier to aim because you can see down the barrell. The other downside is that some of the upgrades we've come across to make this marker even more advanced such as the double trigger are a bit pricy, but even without any upgrades this marker is good as is for a beginner player and is reliable.

5 out of 5 stars This Tippy is good...   May 30, 2007
Got the gun for $111. Sweet deal. Rented a Tippmann 98 once, very impressed. Decided to buy and upgrade, so I got a 16" barrel, a scope, and eventually I will get a stock. Sounds like a sniper paintball marker if you ask me. Excellent gun.
