The Ego is the new benchmark in tournament paintball markers May 23, 2005 Planet Eclipse is no stranger to the sport of paintball. They have been making upgrades for over a decade and their Blade trigger system has been the envy of many players for years now. PE (Planet Eclipse) made already outstanding autocockers the carnivorous beasts they are today with their E2 Blade. These people know what they are doing when it comes to speed and performance. So, when word came down the pike that they were coming out with their own marker my ears perked up. I expected some sort of modified Worr product like a Warped Sportz marker. When I finally peeked my first shots of the Ego, PE's new marker, my jaw dropped. Totally designed from the ground up and built around the E2 Blade technology this marker is not only eye candy but looks like it is ready to rock the paintball tournament world.
Thankfully I did not have to wait too long to have my chance to test it out!
The Basics
The Ego is an open bolt, electropneumatic marker. At the same time it is so much more then that! PE has taken their high end upgrade parts that they have been producing and found ways to use them here on the Ego. You will find the same high flow QEV that you see on the high end cockers. This allows the Ego cycle rates of nearly 40 shots a second. Combine that with the E2 Blade's uncapped rate of fire and with the Eclipse Samurai Swoop trigger and you have a paintball marker only limited by your fingers and your hopper. The British made Ego is one of, if not the fastest marker out of the box in the world right now!
The all aluminum body of the Ego is milled mostly with weight in mind. Any extra weight has been shaved off the housing leaving the Ego weighing under 2 pounds with the stock Shaft Solo barrel and only 1.89 pounds without the barrel and ASA. The marker is very well balanced in your hand too. Even though PE shaved the body down to near nothing they still managed to make a very sleek looking marker with distinguishing lines and a low, aggressive profile.
The Ego measures nearly 20 inches in length. It carries PE's 14 inch Shaft Solo as the stock barrel. The barrel itself is very good for a single piece stock barrel. It is bored at .693 and is cocker threaded. The Ego is 9 inches tall and only 1 inch wide! This is a compact marker packing a punch!
PE also designed the Ego to breathe easy. It operates at 275psi with an integrated ultra low LPR running at amazing low 90psi! In designing a marker to move air efficiently the boys at Planet Eclipse also tweaked some other things under the hood too. They reengineered the ram and hammer and made a single unit out of the two. Calling it the "rammer", this new unit lightens the marker's total weight as well as speeds up the cycle rates.
The blokes at PE have really spent a lot of design time with the Ego and it shows. They even redesigned the feed neck of the marker and came up with the newly patented Def-Tek feed system. They found by setting the feed neck slightly off center of the chamber that when a paintball was fed down it would make contact with the side of the chamber first before hitting the bottom. This would prevent the paintball from bouncing off the bottom and lessen the dwell time of the marker thus increasing cycle rates even more. These guys are bloody brilliant!
You will also find a clamping feed neck on top and an extremely nice ASA with an on/off purge system. Both of these items are designed with just as much attention to detail as the rest of the Ego. The clamping feed neck is light weight with an open slot between the screw and the body. This keeps it light but is still very effective and held all three of the hoppers I attached firmly. The ASA has a mini drop on it as well as the smoothest operating on/off that I have ever used. The Ego can be found in several colors including red, blue (both in fades to silver), yellow, black, green and silver.
Personal Impressions
I was very eager to get my hands on the Ego from Planet Eclipse and thanks to Norm Woo from Team Xclusive, a Paintball Mountain sponsored professional paintball team, I finally got my chance. Norm sent me out a blue Ego from his stable. How many of us ever get a chance to shoot a pro's marker?! I have to be one of the luckiest guys in America!
The box that the Ego comes in is unassuming and rather misleading for what lies under the cardboard lid. It came well packaged and contains the standard ring kit and allen wrenches as well as a very well done instruction manual.
In hand the first thing you will notice about the Ego is the weight. This is a very agile marker. The balance point is right in the grip giving you the feeling that you could spin this on your finger if you had to. The milling on the body is aggressive looking and attractive and the anodized finish is very nice too!
The electronic trigger frame of the Ego is Blade based but with minor adjustments to meet the Ego's body. You have the same interface of the E2 Blade and its cool blue back lit screen. On the backside of the grip you have three buttons that will change all the vitals of the marker including rate of fire, game timer, eye controls, etc as well as controlling the on/off/safety of the marker. The software contained in the Blade will keep you firing true too by taking out bounce from the trigger and keeping you legal in tournament play. After all, this is a tournament marker!
Putting the mask on and getting into the fray is a wonderful experience with Ego. It's size and weight make it very nimble in your hand and it's very easy to target with. The magnetic trigger return keeps the trigger action very smooth. You can even adjust the Samurai trigger 3 ways to tailor the Ego to your style of play. The trigger guard is wide enough to allow you to double play your fingers with ease. This marker is made to rip!
When you have the chance to rock with a tournament paintball marker you just have to do it. I loaded up my Halo B to see what kind of ropes I could lace. Out of the box I was shooting in the 279.4 to 299.9fps range so I had the power dialed in. I let loose a full hopper of Draxxus paint at a target set at about the 50 feet line. I had one odd ball go through but aside from that I only had a 2 foot spread! Nearly all of my shots landed within 10 inches of center. That is outstanding! I was able to dry up the Halo in just under 7 seconds once I got my fingers warmed up. This is as fast or faster then any other stock marker I have ever fired and is truly tournament level.
A huge bonus with the Ego is how easy it is on air. In the middle of the game and after you just dumped in your forth pod you shouldn't have to worry about running out of air. Because the Ego breathes so easy you shouldn't have this problem again. I ran just over 1100 rounds through the Ego with a 72/3000 tied on. That is amazing!
After two weeks with the Ego and enough paintballs to coat a two story house I have made up my mind. There are no stock Angel, Dye, Long or Worr products out there that can match the performance envelope of the Ego by Planet Eclipse. If you do the math you will see it too. Consider all the factors; rate of fire, size, weight, reliability and air consumption and you will find a new leader of the pack. The Ego is now the mark that other tournament level markers will be judged by.
