Amazon.com Product Description
Save money on monthly gym fees and get yourself in shape with the compact, comfortable Schwinn 231 recumbent exercise bike. The 231 boasts all the high-quality features of the Schwinn 213, but adds several extras, including a nicer, easier-to-read instrument panel with a three-position angle adjustment, a better cooling fan, a slightly lower pedal height that produces a more comfortable riding position, and an easy step-through frame. And that doesn't even account for all the essentials, which range from 16 resistance levels to handlebars with an integrated heart rate monitor built into the grip. The handiest feature, however, is unquestionably the anatomically designed recumbent seat, which not only offers a dual-position lumbar support for added comfort, but also a padded base that adjusts in the for/aft positions to accommodate a variety of body types and sizes.

Specifications:

  • 16 resistance levels
  • 10 preset programs and 10 profile courses
  • Programs include calorie goal, time trial, fitness test, BMI measurement, recovery test, results mode, quick start, and manual mode
  • Backlit LCD monitor with BioConnect feedback display
  • Workout stats include time, interval time, RPM, watts, distance, pulse, speed, calories, and resistance
  • Extra-wide comfort seat with dual-position lumbar support and slide bolsters
  • Premium BioFit pedals
  • Handlebars with integrated heart rate grips
  • Onboard storage behind seat for easy access to magazines, towels, and other accessories
  • Adjustable cooling fan
  • Transport wheels for easy movement
About Recumbent Exercise Bikes
Despite the competition from trendy new fitness inventions, exercise bikes continue to be popular options for home exercise. They offer the same aerobic benefits of riding a bicycle at any time, in any weather, without leaving the comfort and safety of home. Exercise bikes don't take up much space, require little or no balance or coordination, and can provide an effective workout for all levels of users, from beginners to serious competitors. While the same could be said for a number of other types of home fitness equipment, the exercise bike is one of the few that allows you to watch television or read a magazine while you work out.

The term recumbent literally means "lying down." Exercising in a recumbent or reclining position allows the user to have full ergonomic back support, without causing strain on the arms, neck and shoulders, all of which can be common effects of using an upright bicycle. For many people, having convenient access to quality exercise equipment is critical to sticking with a long-term exercise program.

5 out of 5 stars Some Assembly Required   November 21, 2008
Actually a lot of assembly. The good news is that the instructions are very clear, tools are provided, and the hardware is laid out with each item carefully identified.

Once you get it together and start using it you will find that the operation is very smooth and quiet. It is comfortable, easy to adjust, and very stable. It does creak a bit if you peddle at a cadence over 85 or so but you can notch up the resistance and that will slow you down.

The controls are very easy to use. It asks for a lot of information when you start to use one of the built in programs but if you use the same program over again it remembers your input so you just have to press enter unless you need to change the value.

The built in fan is a nice addition. After you get heated up from exercising you might want it to blow harder than it does.

Overall it is a very good machine and I am glad I purchased it.

5 out of 5 stars Schwinn 231 a winner   November 12, 2008
My whole family uses and loves this exercise bike. It's super comfortable and easy to use. It was a little bit complicated to set up, but the directions were easy to follow and tools were included. This bike is pretty heavy, but the handle on the back and wheels make it easy to move it around. I will be getting an exercise mat to put it on so the carpet doesn't get messed up; you may want to order one along with the bike if you get one.

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy it!   November 7, 2008

I have had my Schwinn 213 for just over a year and have used it for about 40 hours in all. Unbelievably the computer in it is broken which means that you can no longer do anything with the $550 bike except sit on it and ride it at the easiest level. No settings, no timings, nothing! A new computer would cost $279 and that would be foolish - being the first one lasted only a year! Do yourself a favor AND DON'T BUY THE SCWINN!

5 out of 5 stars Schwinn 231 Recumbent Exercise Bike as Advertised   October 25, 2008
I received the product in perfect condition and on time. Amazon had easily the best deal. Assembly took about 2 hrs with the tools provided and the directions were easy to understand and accurate. I read the user's guide and was comfortable with the operation in about 15 min. The bike is so quiet that I watch tv at normal volume levels while I ride. If you prefer to ride with the fan on, that will, of course, change. There are so many programs to choose from that any desires for variety can be easily satisfied. The display is big and easy to read.
I cannot at this early stage in my ownership, vouch for durability, but out of the box, I couldn't be happier. This bike appears to be a great value for the money.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Choice   October 16, 2008
I did my research, and the toughest choice once I narrowed it down was upright or recumbent. Next was Schwinn 231 or Schwinn 230.
I went recumbent because of a bad back. I have been a runner for years, and all that pounding has taken it's toll on a bad back condition. So buying this bike was a huge step for me in finding an alternative to running.
Upon shipping receipt, box was slightly damaged, but very well packed and protected. All parts were in fine shape and nothing was missing. It took just under 2 hours to assemble. No issues here.
I have been using the bike for about a month now. It is excellent and deserves the 5 star rating. It's sturdy and very well built. It's extremely quiet as many other reviewers have noted. The program choices give you many options from challenging plateaus to a ride in the park. You choose what type of ride you feel like doing. The difficulty levels switch gears very smoothly and also very quietly. The back lumbar support is very comfortable and my back has felt great with no issues since I started riding this bike. I would recommend this to anyone.
There are 3 differences between the 231 and 230: adjustable back support, wider pedals, and backlit with program enhanced control panel. Worth the extra $100. I say yes, you make the call.
