Product Description The strong force of the spray when combined with the unique citronella odor provides the unexpected element of surprise. The attack is interrupted and the animal is distracted from the object of its aggression, thus giving valuable seconds to help the user retreat to a safe place. Easy to use, just shake the can once a day prior to potential use, spray toward animal's nose until animal retreats. Each can contains approximately 12 one-second sprays at a range of up to 10 ft. and is highly effective in stopping low to medium- level aggression. Animal Control Mailman Why it's better: When tested with trained attack dogs, this revolutionary citronella formula was found to be just as effective as 10% pepper spray, yet without harmful side effects. Unlike pepper spray, DirectStop does not cause pain; therefore, it will not increase aggression and can be used indoors. In addition, it won't injure the user or onlookers if spray blows back. Dog walking Running When to use: DirectStop is ideal to carry when cycling, running or walking with your family or pets. It is also, a great product for dog trainers, kennel staff, animal control officers, mail carriers and utility workers to carry instead of pepper spray. It is not only effective on dogs, but can also be used on cats, venomous snakes, raccoons, squirrels, opossums, etc.

worked well January 5, 2009 I have used this to break up a dog fight. The larger, more aggressive dog stop attacking as soon as it was hit in the face and it walked off without showing any further signs of aggression. The less aggressive dog (which belonged to a friend) smelled slightly flowery afterwards, but it was not bothered by the smell on its coat.
I unintentionally tested the canister and its seals by washing it in my pant pocket. It went through a regular watch cycle and medium-high drier cycle and yet shot a stream as well afterwards as before.
Not for raccoons October 23, 2007 I used one whole can as directed on a small aggressive raccoon coming toward me looking for food in a local park. It had almost no effect on the animal which kept coming. If you want protection from animals such as this, then look for some other much stronger spray product.
works well when used properly September 9, 2007 Be sure you practice using the spray button before you need it! It takes a bit of coordination to work the mechanism, and when you need it, you need that spray in less than a second! You do NOT want to be fumbling with the safety catch.
The citronella spray is a useful and relatively safe tool against moderate canine aggression. It probably will not halt dogs fully agitated and engaged, but even mace can fail against that.
Our Malamute puppy is 10 months old and 60 lbs. He started to tangle with our elderly Border Collie mix. I gave the Malamute a burst of the citronella right in the face at the eyes, and he broke off long enough to separate them and let him calm down. He was not blinded. He blinked a bit and was fine. The smell of the citronella dispersed from within the room within a day. It did not stain the kitchen cabinets.
Education and reading the dogs' body language is always your most useful tool against dog aggression. (search Amazon for books on dog aggression) Direct Stop spray is a good device to give dogs pause and get away from the situation.
Absolutely essential training tool! April 1, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
No, this spray won't stop every aggressive dog, but it sure stops a lot of them. I once used it to stop a bloody dogfight between four dogs, and it worked like magic--the dogs just all turned around and walked off in separate directions. No method will solve every problem, which is why backups and a variety of training tools are needed. But this is one tool that consistently works extremely well for me as a dog trainer. The spray is excellent for stopping bratty nipping, cat chasing, counter surfing, and other misbehaviors in many dogs. It does not hurt the dog at all, and often creates instant respect for the owner in the dog. The dog seems to think, "Wow! What a stink! Maybe I'll start listening better!" It often takes three or more sprays to have an effect, since a smart dog will frequently repeat the misbehavior to see if the stink will really happen again. I don't know of anything else that works so consistently well in so many situations. This spray has literally saved the lives of dogs that were so out of control that the owners were ready to dump them at the dog pound. And, again, all without hurting the dog. An outstanding product.
Have a back up plan along with this.... June 21, 2006 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
As a person who interracts with aggressive dogs on a daily basis and has had many occasions to try this product, I've found the title to be a bit misleading. While this will temporarily annoy/disorient some aggressive dogs, if a dog is really determined enough this will not "stop" him. Please heed the "fine print" warning on the label before counting on this for your safety. I'll give this three stars as this will temporarily distract your low-medium aggressive dogs thus allowing you a chance to escape. I simply cannot give this 4-5 because it is not effective against a high-violent aggressive dog. It's better than nothing but PLEASE always have a back up plan....
