Product Description Originally developed for the Swedish Department of Defense, Swedish FireSteel is a flash of genius. Its 3,000C spark makes fire building easy in any weather, at any altitude. Used by a number of armies around the world, Swedish FireSteel's dependability has already made it a favorite of survival experts, hunters, fishermen and campers. It has also found its way into cabins and backyards as a fool-proof way to light stoves and gas-barbecues.

It's so easy, it's like magic December 15, 2008 I've never before started a fire with anything other than matches, either regular matchbook, wooden kitchen, long fireplace, Strike Anywhere or storm-proof, and bought the Scout as part of my hiking/preparedness kit for a secondary source of fire. I was surprised that I got a little flame going with only my second strike the very first time I tried it to make a practice fire near home. Of course, I first scraped off the paint, making a bare strip down the rod and leaving the rest protected until I need to use it, and I used the cotton bud off of a Q-tip and stretched it out, but I didn't expect it to be that easy. The lanyard wasn't too short and the striker plate, that has "UP" on one side so we put the right edge against the rod, worked just fine. My next try got a flame going on my third strike and my next two tries were similar. With some paper under the cotton, and dead leaves around, starting my fire with only the Scout was so easy, it felt like magic. I'm impressed!

Sparks right up. But I bought it for a camping trip, then forgot it and did not go camping again the rest of the summer. Kids and I will plan a trip next year after the winter.
HOT! October 30, 2008 Very good little fire starter. Seems like it will last a long time. Solid construction, hot sparks.

After I bought this firesteel, I was very anxious to try it out. I tried probably over 100 times, and I could only get a spark every time. The spark was bright, and it was pretty hot, but it wouldnt light anything. I tried paper, a block of wood, and a bundle of dry grass. I don't think I am using this right, you may have to use that special "Mayadust" that is manufactered by the same company. But, I doubt that armies would use this if you had to have Mayadust in order to light a fire.
