Fantastic pack stove August 16, 2008 I've had my whisperlight going on 15 years now and it's never failed to light, never leaked, or thrown a fireball at me while camping. I toss it in my pack and head on out. I've been using a old Coleman stove for the last few years since having a family and doing mostly car camping. We got the chance to do some camping by ourselves this last weekend and wanted to go light so I brought it along and had no issues lighting it after it had been sitting in the garage for the last few years. We used it for cooking 2 meals a day and used less then 30% of a 22oz bottle of fuel. I've never liked the idea of canisters of gas when most of the camping we do is above 11k feet. Great product and I'll be handing it down in 30 years or so.
Heats well but overall a messy and annoying stove July 22, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I guess I don't like the removable fuel bottle concept. Every time you disconnect the bottle for transport you lose the fuel in the line onto your hands or where ever. Same with releasing bottle pressure. We had two of these stoves on a recent kayak trip and both failed to light one morning so we had a campfire to make coffee. Both required the extensive cleaning step later. Mine has been used maybe 10 times and I am looking for a better backpack stove. Previously I had the classic Svea/Optimus cylindrical stove which served me well for over 30 years.
Gift for a Boy Scout June 18, 2008 0 out of 4 found this review helpful
This stove was specifically requested as a graduation gift for my nephew, who is a 14 year old Boy Scout. His father, who is the troop leader, specifically asked for this stove, as he knew others in the troop who had one and really enjoyed it. To my knowledge, he hasn't used it yet, but they are about to go on a long campout, and I'm sure it will be put to the test. So even though I put 4 stars on it, it could very well be a 5 star product. Yet to be determined.
AWESOME stove June 14, 2008 This stove is GREAT! My husband and I use it for backpacking, and so far, it has held it's flame through 35 mph winds (with a wind screen of course, but still!) and has never gone out even when it was nearly blown off the table (be careful not to start a fire if this happens to you). It packs up small and 1 bottle of fuel (the bigger one) lasts through three days of cooking meals, boiling water to make coffee & tea, and to clean dishes, hair, etc. The ONLY downside to it is that the flame is extremely HOT, which means you can't set your food down on the burner to cook it because it will scald (this is not a problem when boiling water, however). You have to hold it a couple of inches above the flame to prevent scalding. This one downside is definitely outweighed by this plus: the stove cooks food really fast, which means it not only uses less fuel, but your already cooked food doesn't get cold while you are cooking the other items that go with your meal.
Durable, reliable, and log lasting March 5, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Ive had one of these for 10+ years now. There is an art to lighting it, but once you understand it is a snap. This uses a catalytic process, it needs to heat itself up for use. Great heat producer to cook anything you could want. There is a windscreen that came with mine which is invaluable and always used. Has been folded up and unfolded many times still is in perfect shape with no cracks. The base itself is studry enough to put anything you like on top of it. I often find myself preferring to use this over my two burner colman stove. The portability is great. The stand legs swing around, everything is disassembled, and it fits in a small nylon bag maybe 8" x 4". I have cleaned it once. Used it probably 100 times.
