good quality but SMALL August 25, 2008 This is a small shovel. I missed that info in the product listing. Probably good for backpacking but I got it for use in my 4WD off-roading and it's really too small for that purpose.
Small, but effective August 20, 2008 This shove/pick combo proved smaller than I had anticipated, but will do the job it was intended for. It is well constructed, folds up, and fits into a nylon pouch about 4" x 6". No complaints here
Happy Camper/Hiker August 3, 2008 This is a good little tool to take along with you on hiking/backpacking trips or to dig a SMALL trench around your tent if camping in order to re-divert rain water. It also comes with its own carrying pouch that easily slips onto any style belt. I suggest matching the belt size to the belt loop of the carrying pouch, otherwise this tool will dangle about and flop around while walking. I bought mine a Cabelas, so I paid a little extra for it. This tool is also good to keep inside your car, especially during winter. If you get stuck on an icy road, this tool will chip the ice quite nicely. I've read some of the reviews stating that this tool is heavy, doesn't stay connected, or they hurt themselves with it. True, this tool does weigh little more than the advertized pound; that's because it is made out of steel and steel tends to be heavy. This tool, when everything is screwed together tightly, does loosen itself over continued use, it wasn't designed to go prospecting for gold, digging a grave, or such. You might actually have to stop what you are doing and periodically re-tighten the connections. Read another review that someone hurt them selves with this item, well, good for you dumb a$%! He was most likely utilizing this item in an unsafe manner. Overall, this little shovel will do what you need it to do, provided that you are safety concious. Mine works just fine for digging the emergency poo parlors while hiking/backpacking. Believe it or not, that is what this little tools intended purpose was. The only complaint that I actulally have with this tool is that its carrying pouch ripped quite easily; but that was most likely my fault for I was crawling through a narrow tunnel while caving and forgot about having this tool on my tool belt and it got caught on some rocks.
Leave No Trace! June 12, 2008 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
You cannot be a responsible backpacker and not have a shovel or pick to bury your personal waste. This device weights a little more than just one pound and is easily cleaned and even fits into its own lightweight bag. To be responsible, whenever backpacking, one should always dig a privy pit at least a foot deep and preferably deeper. Trying to use sticks or rocks to dig is silly. This is too lightweight and too handy to not bring on any trip. It is also really handy for digging trenches around your tent when you expect rain. The pick is especially handy in heavy and hard-packed soils. Clean up after yourself! Leave no trace!
Coleman folding "shovel" May 11, 2008 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
The Coleman folding shovel is so small as to be impractical except for survival gardening. It is in fact, no larger than a garden trowel. Over all I'm not very happy with my purchase
