About Allen Bike Racks
In 1967, after a few years of working on the aerospace technology for the Apollo missions, Dick Allen was out of a job. Government cutbacks led Allen, a Harvard-trained physicist, to transform his garage hobby into a new industry. A cycling enthusiast, inventor, and family man, Allen had a personal need for a bike-carrying device. On weekends, he would take his sons and wife to Cape Cod or the White Mountains of New Hampshire. What proved difficult time and again was the transport of his family?s bicycles. Rather than fight through inconvenience with twine and a dinged car, Allen sought an answer for himself as well as a market in which he foresaw major growth possibilities.

Always a pathfinder, Allen took to work in his Lincoln, Massachusetts garage in search of a more efficient way to transport bikes. Drafting designs during the day and constructing them throughout the night, he put together a model made of electrical conduit, metal strapping, and fire hose casings (for padding). At first, the Allens? tested the prototype on weekend excursions. Finding the first trunk-mounted rack to be a success, Dick started Allen Bike Racks. Dealer acceptance came quickly, and by 1971 Allen Bike Racks were sold nationally through a number of major bicycle distributors. Today, the company owns over three dozen patents and offers a versatile product line of bike racks while Dick?s son Alex now owns and operates the business. What started out as a small garage run operation now operates three warehouses nationally, two factories abroad, and has products sold in more than a dozen countries around the world.

5 out of 5 stars bike rack   November 22, 2008
Drove from Michigan to Oregon with four bikes on the back of my Suburu legacy. Drove through bad road conditions and high winds. The product was sturdy and did the job just fine.

We purchased this product so we could haul 4 bikes at the same time we are towing a popup camper. The tow vehicle is a 2008 Aspen SUV. In that situation there are some options but they are limited. We also wanted something we could use whether or not we are towing the camper, so a camper-mounted rack was out. The good news is that 4 bikes fit on the rack with very little problem - I rotated the handlebars on bike #1 90 degress to help the puzzle fit but that was the only modification. The bad news is, when we arrived at our destination there was some damage to the rear door of our vehicle, where the lower bar rests. That is a lot of weight, and apparently that part of the door could not handle it. There are a couple small dents, which are not exceedingly hideous but are noticable. I am considering adding some kind of buffer to that area, something that can absorb / distrubute the weight without incurring further damage to the door. Anybody have any suggestions?

1 out of 5 stars A Bike Rack Adventure   August 14, 2008

We purchased the Allen Deluxe 4-Bike Trunk Mount Rack for a recent camping trip. We wanted to take all four of our bikes but neither of our vehicles is equipped with a hitch. After researching racks both in local stores and online, this Allen rack seemed to be a good choice. It was easy to mount on the car and held the bikes beautifully . . . in the driveway. Even for a short trip around the neighborhood it seemed we had made a wise purchase. However, 45 minutes from home and on a busy interstate during rush hour traffic, we were singing a different tune. The rack collapsed and though the bikes did not actually fall off, they were being dragged along the highway at 65 miles an hour. We had to call for help and then sit along the interstate with our two boys for over an hour. There was damage to the rear bumper of the car to the tune of $644. It became evident that it would have been cheaper to just rent four bikes for the week once we got to our destination. I would not recommend trunk mounted (or non-hitch mounted) racks for anything over two bikes. Even though we were well under the recommended total bike weight for the rack, it was just too much for the rack to handle.

5 out of 5 stars Great quality bike rack   August 12, 2008
This bike rack was relatively easy to put on and to take off. We went to Colorado and back with it and the bikes stayed secure the whole time. Foam pads help protect car. Great buy.

We used this bike rake going to the beach....a 5 hour trip. It worked perfect! The bikes were very easy to get on, no noise or movement, easy to put on (we have a minivan), great to store (folds nicely). We were very impressed with it and was so well worth the $100 we paided for it. We have a men's & women's adult mountain bike and two children's 18" bikes. Well made!!
