Interviewing a Favorite Character or the Author of Harry Potter
Subject: Language Arts
Section: D - Responding, Consolidating Meaning
1. Responding creatively through dramatizing a story episode, and making oral and visual presentations.
Grade: Grade 6-7
Prescribed Learning Outcomes:
Communicate Ideas and Information (Composing and Creating) It is expected that students will locate, gather, select, and record information for specific purposes from various human, print, and electronic sources resources on the topic. (Grade 6).
Communicate Ideas and Information (Knowledge of Information) It is expected that students will use basic punctuation and capitalization consistently and explore the use of more advanced punctuation for such purposes as letter writing, script writing, and e-mail.
Communicate Ideas and Information (Presenting and Valuing) It is expected that students will demonstrate pride and satisfaction in using language to create and express their thoughts, ideas, and feelings through a variety of oral, written, and electronic forms (Grade 7).
Materials: Various props (collected by the teacher and the students), paper, pencil, Harry Potter novels, biographic information on J.K. Rowling, video of interviews, TV, and VCR.
Activity:
Introduction:
Show the students a video that contains a variety of interviews by
different interviewers and interviewees. After the video presentation, discuss the following:
1.The purpose of interviewing.
2.The roles of the interviewer and the interviewee.
3.The types of questions that were being asked. Make a list of these questions.
4.The way that the interviewee answered the questions (expanded on answer, few single-word answers).
Development:
Have the students work in pairs (or possibly a group of three) to create an interview with either the author of Harry Potter, J.K. Rowling, or a character (or two) from the Harry Potter novel. One person will play the interviewer and the other(s) play the role of the character(s) in the novel. The students will be expected to produce a list of questions that will be addressed. Interviews will be presented to the class.
Character Interview - have the interviewer ask questions that pertain to a significant part of the novel. They should ask the character(s) to tell about and explain what happened in the novel and why he or she reacted to way he or she did. Students should interview and respond in role (perhaps using a special voice), and any props or costumes (broomstick, quiddich ball, robes, etc.) that are significant in the novel should be included in the interview.
Author Interview - have the interviewer ask questions that pertain to the life of the author, the books that the author has written, their motivation for writing the novel, and anything else that would aid in creating an interesting interview with the author. If more knowledge is needed about the author's background, etc., the student is welcome to do more research. Students should interview and respond in role, and any props or costumes (other books, costume to look like the author, etc.) that are significant to the Author's life, background, etc. should be included in the interview.
Closure:
After all groups have presented, discuss the following:
1.Did you learn anything about the author or the characters that you did not know before the interviews?
2.Is interviewing harder than you thought? Why or why not?
Assessment: The students will be assessed by the teacher using a weighted rating scale that addresses the following:
1.Participation within their group.
2.Choice of costumes/props.
3.Quality of questions (from their list).
4.Quality of the presentation (questioning skills, answering skills, enunciation, pronunciation, etc)
